About the Artist - Roo Maurice

I am a London-based fine artist specialising in hand-drawn animal portraits, working in traditional pastels and digital media. Every piece I create is drawn individually from photographs, with careful observation and sensitivity at the centre of the process — no AI, no filters, and no automated techniques.
My work focuses on capturing the expression that feels familiar to the people who know the animal best. Rather than aiming for something generic or overly polished, I take time to study the subtle details that give each animal its personality and presence, creating portraits that feel personal, considered and true.
Alongside my fine art practice, I also work professionally in the film and television industry as a hair and make-up designer. This background has shaped my attention to detail, understanding of form and expression, and the high standards I bring to every commissioned portrait.
I work with clients across the UK and internationally, creating bespoke artworks that range from bold statement pieces to quiet, minimalist portraits and memorials, all drawn with care, intention and respect for the subject.
How to Commission a Pawtrait

Commissioning a portrait is a straightforward, guided process, and I’m happy to advise at every stage.
1. Get in touch
Use the contact form or email to tell me a little about your animal, the portrait style you’re interested in, and any deadlines. You’re welcome to attach photographs at this stage, or send them afterwards if that’s easier.
2. Choosing reference photographs
Clear reference photographs help me capture expression and likeness accurately. Images taken in good natural light, with the face in focus and the eyes visible, always work best. Phone photos are absolutely fine — I’ll let you know if an image is suitable or if an alternative would help achieve the best result.
3. Style, format & delivery
Once we’ve agreed the style and composition, I begin the artwork.
Digital portraits are supplied as high-resolution JPEG files, suitable for printing at home or professionally, and can also be ordered as printed artworks if preferred.
Pastel portraits are hand-drawn on quality paper and carefully packaged for delivery.
Commissions are kept intentionally limited so each portrait receives the time and attention it deserves.
If you’re unsure about photographs or formats, I’m always happy to advise — you don’t need to have everything decided before getting in touch.
